Wizards of the Coast is scaling back its Magic: The Gathering release cadence for 2027, confirming a move from seven sets down to six. As reported by IGN, this new schedule will maintain an even split between original lore sets—known as “Universes Within”—and crossover “Universes Beyond” releases. Perhaps most importantly for players feeling crossover fatigue, the developer has confirmed there will be no back-to-back Universes Beyond releases throughout the year.

The 2027 Lineup

The year kicks off in early February with a visit to the “Sunken Realm” of Nauctis. This set is set to lean heavily into oceanic themes, featuring merfolk, homarids, and seals within a narrative centered on warring kingdoms deep beneath the waves.

Following the recent announcement of Marvel: Darkhold Destiny, Wizards revealed that this set will focus on an original story rather than simply integrating established Marvel characters into the Magic multiverse. Product offerings for this set will include Play Boosters, Collector Boosters, Bundles, two Scene Boxes, and four Commander Decks.

Later in the year, players will return to the cyberpunk plane of Kamigawa. This set, described as a “mechs versus kaiju” battle, will see the plane of Ikoria collide with Kamigawa, forcing inhabitants to harness technology to combat colossal monsters.

Finally, the Zhalfir set is being positioned as a love letter to long-time fans. It will focus on the afrofantasy genre and feature the return of the iconic chronomancer Teferi Akosa, aiming to honor the legacy of this specific era of Magic lore.

Why it matters

For players, the reduction in total annual sets is a significant shift in release velocity. By capping the schedule at six sets and avoiding consecutive Universes Beyond releases, Wizards appears to be responding to community feedback regarding market saturation.

Looking ahead, Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks has noted that future Universes Beyond partnerships will likely shift toward “fantasy-adjacent” properties. This move away from modern, urban settings—specifically moving away from New York City-based themes—signals a deliberate effort to keep crossovers feeling more aligned with Magic’s traditional fantasy identity. Players should monitor official announcements later this year for the reveal of the two remaining, currently unconfirmed, Universes Beyond sets.
