Xbox is expanding its hardware ecosystem with the newly announced Nano Controller, a smaller and more affordable option compared to the standard wireless model. As reported by VGC, this new variation is officially set to launch on November 4. Priced at $49.99 / £44.99, the device is now available for pre-order through the official Microsoft Store.
The Nano Controller is engineered specifically for portability and accessibility. It measures 5 inches in length and weighs just 3.5 ounces, a significant reduction in physical footprint compared to the standard Xbox Wireless Controller, which measures 6 inches and weighs 10 ounces. Despite this smaller frame, the device retains the full suite of buttons found on the standard controller, ensuring that core gameplay functionality remains intact. Additionally, it introduces a programmable Action Button, allowing users to customize shortcuts for frequently used tasks such as capturing screenshots or recording gameplay clips.
A key functional difference between the two models is the power management system. While the standard Wireless Controller relies on AA batteries or a separately purchased battery pack, the Nano Controller comes equipped with a built-in rechargeable battery. This integration removes the need for recurring battery purchases. Connectivity is also versatile, as the device supports both the Xbox Wireless interface and Bluetooth. This enables compatibility not only with Xbox consoles but also with PCs, mobile phones, and various smart TVs.
For players who prefer a different tier of hardware, rumors suggest that Microsoft is also working on a high-end option. VGC reports that details surfaced last week via the backend of the Xbox Design Lab site regarding a potential Xbox Elite Series 3 controller. Leaked specifications indicate that this premium iteration may offer advanced haptics, an audio scroll wheel, and the option to choose between Hall effect or TMR sticks to combat the issue of stick drift. These leaks also suggest options for choosing between standard, loose, and tight stick tension.
Why it matters
The introduction of the Nano Controller offers a budget-friendly entry point for users who find the standard controller too bulky for long play sessions or for those looking to avoid the ongoing cost of AA batteries. By combining a smaller, lighter form factor with a built-in rechargeable power source and cross-device Bluetooth connectivity, Xbox is providing a distinct alternative that prioritizes portability. While the Nano Controller addresses the entry-level market, the concurrent rumors regarding an Elite Series 3 controller indicate that the company is simultaneously exploring ways to address the high-end gaming market with hardware improvements focused on durability and tactile feedback.
