Lux
the Lady of Luminosity
The story
Where she comes from
Demacia. A kingdom that presents itself as the honourable one, all white stone and shining armour and codes of conduct, and which is also the most frightening place in Runeterra to be born magical.
Demacia does not merely dislike magic. It has institutions built to find it and remove it. Mageseekers hunt people down. Petricite, a stone that absorbs magic, is built into the architecture of the capital itself. The society’s stability rests on the belief that magic is a disease and Demacians are clean.
The story
Luxanna Crownguard was born into that, in one of the great houses closest to the throne, and she can pull light out of the air.
Her family name is the reason she is still walking free. The Crownguards are Demacian nobility, her brother Garen commands the Dauntless Vanguard, and their standing is such that suspicion slides off them. Lux has spent her life using that shield deliberately, playing the bright and slightly silly noble daughter in public because nobody investigates the harmless one.
This is a much darker character than the pink-and-gold splash art suggests. Lux is not a cheerful mage. Lux is a person performing cheerfulness as a survival strategy, in a country that would destroy her family to get to her, who has to lie to a brother she loves and who believes what Demacia taught him. The cost of being found out is not personal ruin, it is everyone around her going down too.
What she does in a game
Long-range artillery mage, playable mid or support. She fires a binding light that roots the first two people it hits, drops a slowing zone she can detonate on her own timing, throws a shield through her whole team, and fires an enormous laser across most of a lane.
Her passive marks anyone she hits with a spell so her next basic attack detonates for extra damage, which quietly makes her far more dangerous in lane than her range suggests.
What it feels like
Playing Lux is a sniper fantasy. Everything is a skillshot, everything is long, and a good root into a full combo removes a person from the game from a distance where they could not meaningfully react. When it works it is the most satisfying feeling in the game. When it does not you are a very fragile person who has thrown all her cooldowns at empty ground.
Playing against her is about the minion wave and cover. She is helpless in melee range and she knows it, so she will never be there. You do not outplay Lux, you close the distance or you accept the poke.
Who should pick her up
New players, without hesitation. She is the best on-ramp in the game for learning skillshots, because her range is long enough that mistakes are not immediately fatal and her kit teaches combo order naturally.
She is also, unusually, a champion you can keep playing for years. The floor is low and the ceiling is a very long way up, because at high level every one of her spells is a prediction rather than an aim.
Avoid her if you want to be durable. She has no escape at all. None. Anything that reaches her kills her.
