Overview

Known story

What official material tells us about this character so far.

Where he comes from

The Shadow Isles, which were not always shadowed. They were the Blessed Isles, a place of scholarship and healing so respected that outsiders were rarely allowed to set foot there. Then a king tried to resurrect his dead queen using a power nobody understood, and the Ruination broke across the islands and killed everything on them.

It did not stop there. It kept them. Everyone who died in the Ruination stayed, hollowed out and bound to the place, and the Black Mist rolls off the Isles to this day and takes more.

The story

Here is the part that makes Thresh worse than the rest of them. Most of the Shadow Isles’ spectres are victims. They were ordinary people caught in a catastrophe and twisted into something they never chose.

Thresh was already like this.

In life he was a warden, part of an order that guarded a vault of dangerous things on the Isles. It was a position of absolute trust and he was very good at it, and he spent it studying how much a human being could endure. Not for information. Not for a cause. Because he found it interesting, and the job gave him people and time and no supervision. He is understood to have been responsible for a great deal of suffering long before the Ruination arrived.

When it came, it did not corrupt him. It just removed the last practical limits. Now he has eternity, he cannot be stopped by anything as simple as a body, and he collects souls in a lantern he carries. Not to consume them. To keep them. He is a jailer. That is what he was, and death was the promotion.

What he does in a game

Support, and the deepest one in the game. He throws a scythe on a chain that hooks the first thing it touches and can pull him in or pull them along. He drops his lantern on the ground and any ally who clicks it gets dragged to him, which is a rescue tool with a range that should not be legal.

He sweeps enemies toward or away from him depending on which way he is walking, and drops a box of walls that slow and damage anyone who breaks through. His passive means every soul he collects makes him permanently stronger, so a Thresh forty minutes into a game is a genuinely different champion from the one who left base.

What it feels like

Playing Thresh is the closest League gets to playing a puzzle in real time. Every tool does two opposite things depending on how you use it. The hook is engage or peel. The lantern is a save or an engage. The sweep pushes or pulls.

Good Thresh play looks like the enemy team making a series of unforced errors. It is not. It is one person removing every option they had, one at a time.

Who should pick him up

Nobody who is new. This is the honest answer. Thresh is the highest skill expression support in the game and a bad Thresh actively loses games, because the lantern that saves a teammate also drags them into a fight they cannot survive.

Pick him up when you already understand support and want a champion where the difference between you and a better player is visible in every single interaction. There is no ceiling on him. People have played Thresh for a decade and still find new things.
