Reyna

Duelist

The story

Where she comes from

Mexico. And unlike Jett, the origin does real work here. Reyna is written as someone who came up without an institution behind her, which shows in how she operates inside the Protocol: she is a member of a team who does not particularly behave like one.

She is protective of her sister and dismissive of nearly everyone else, and the game reflects that in the most direct way a game can. Every other agent has at least one ability that helps a teammate. Reyna has none.

What she actually is

Reyna is a feedback loop wearing a person. Kill an enemy and they drop a soul orb. Consume the orb and you either heal past your maximum or become briefly untouchable. Do not get the kill and you have a blind and nothing else.

No agent in VALORANT is designed this bluntly. Riot built a character whose power curve is entirely self-referential, which makes her the clearest statement in the game about what a duelist is supposed to be.

What she does in a game

Duelist. Her leer casts an eye through the world that nearsights anyone who looks at it, and it can be shot out. Devour eats a soul orb to heal rapidly above her normal health. Dismiss eats one to make her intangible for a moment, which is how she survives a trade.

Her ultimate speeds up her firing, reloading and equipping, and makes soul orb charges unlimited for the duration.

Note what is missing. No smoke, no flash your team can use, no information, no map control. She contributes nothing to a round she does not personally win.

What it feels like

A good Reyna round is the most powerful feeling available in this game. You take a fight, you win it, you heal to full, you take the next one before anyone has rotated, and you clear a site alone. Nothing else in VALORANT snowballs like it.

A bad Reyna round is dead silence. You threw a blind, you lost the duel, and your team is now playing four against five with no utility spent in their favour. There is no version where you were quietly useful.

Playing against her is about denying the first kill and nothing else. Trade fast, never let her get a clean opening, and she is a player with one destructible eye.

Who should pick her up

She is the most popular agent in low ranks and there is a good reason for it. Her kit teaches you nothing about VALORANT except how to win a gunfight, which is genuinely the most important skill and the one worth building first. If you are learning to aim, she rewards it immediately.

She is also the agent most likely to be holding your team back without you noticing, because the games where she does nothing do not feel like her fault. If you are picking Reyna to avoid learning utility, you have picked correctly and you will stop improving.
