The Blood of Dawnwalker puts players in the role of Coen, a young man caught between two natures: human by day, vampire by night. Set in the mid-14th century, the game frames its core conflict around saving his family while he struggles with what he is becoming. The dark fantasy RPG from Rebel Wolves launched on September 3, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC, and sold one million copies in its first three days.
The story premise
The game takes place in Vale Sangora, a fictional valley in the Carpathian Mountains inspired by Hungarian, Romanian and wider Carpathian folklore. After Coen becomes a Dawnwalker, the ancient vampire lord Brencis abducts his family. Coen has to rescue them before Brencis’s investiture ceremony, while resisting the curse pulling him toward the monster he could become.
That forced duality is what makes the premise compelling. Coen is not a fully fledged vampire antihero or a clean-cut hero. Every decision carries weight because he is fighting on two fronts: external threats to his family and internal threats to who he is. Players’ choices shape how the story unfolds.
Thirty days to save a family
The story is built around a time limit. Players have 30 in-game days and nights before Brencis’s ceremony. Time works like a currency: only actions that move the plot forward advance the clock, while exploring and fighting do not use it up. That makes quest choice a strategic decision rather than a stressful countdown, and it means players can reach very different outcomes.
Day and night gameplay
Coen’s two forms change how the game plays. By day he fights with directional swordplay and blood magic. By night he gains vampiric powers and can rely on stealth. Choosing the right form for each situation is central to the experience.
A world built for more
The 14th-century setting stands out. Most vampire fiction clusters around Gothic Europe or the modern day, and starting centuries earlier gives the game room to do something fresher with vampire lore, drawing on feudal power structures and regional folklore. Rebel Wolves has framed Dawnwalker as the start of a larger saga, though no sequel has been announced.
A strong launch
Rebel Wolves was founded by former CD Projekt Red developers who worked on The Witcher series, and Bandai Namco Entertainment publishes the game. Critics praised its writing and dual-form gameplay, and the one-million milestone in three days is a strong result for a new IP.
Why it matters
If you are tired of playing villains for the sake of it or straightforward heroes, The Blood of Dawnwalker offers a messier middle ground: a man trying to save what matters while fighting his own nature.
For RPG fans looking for a new world rather than another sequel, it is one of the year’s most distinctive releases, and its time system rewards careful planning over rushing.
