If you have been struggling to survive the daylight hours in The Blood of Dawnwalker, there is no need to worry—you aren’t doing anything wrong. The game’s director, Konrad Tomaszkiewicz, has confirmed that the disparity in power between the protagonist’s human form and his vampire form is an intentional design choice rather than a balancing oversight.
The mechanics of power disparity
According to Tomaszkiewicz, the intention was to mirror the classic trope of a werewolf—someone who is inherently more vulnerable as a human during the day. The vampire form is designed to be significantly more powerful, featuring claws that scale in strength automatically with the player’s level, negating the need to hunt for better equipment. Furthermore, vampire survival is bolstered by regenerative health segments, the ability to heal through combat bites, and the consumption of blood vials.
In contrast, those choosing to navigate the world as a human face a more grounded challenge. Players must rely on finding and upgrading swords, and health recovery is strictly limited to crafted potions. Tomaszkiewicz notes that this design allows the studio to tell stories with different types of antagonists without needing to constantly escalate the power level of villains to match a super-powered protagonist.
Compensating with witchcraft
To ensure the game remains finishable and engaging for those who prefer to remain in human form—or for those pursuing specific human-focused narrative endings—the developers introduced a suite of powerful witchcraft abilities. These spells are exclusive to the daylight hours. While the studio acknowledges that the vampire form is generally stronger, these witchcraft abilities are designed to be potent enough that players are not forced to simply wait for nightfall to make progress. This design philosophy ties back into the studio’s broader focus on player choice, allowing the experience to remain challenging yet viable regardless of the chosen approach.
Why it matters
For players, understanding that the difficulty gap is by design is key to managing expectations. If you are finding certain encounters or castle assaults nearly impossible during the day, the game is nudging you to either lean into your witchcraft abilities or consider waiting for the night cycle to unleash your vampire powers.
Looking ahead, players experiencing technical frustrations should note that Rebel Wolves is preparing a major patch for The Blood of Dawnwalker, expected in early October. While this update aims to address performance and stability concerns, the team has made it clear that the core time-based power dynamic is a permanent fixture of the current game’s design.
