Wizards of the Coast has officially confirmed its next major Universes Beyond collaboration, bringing the Star Wars galaxy to the Dungeons & Dragons tabletop roleplaying game. Revealed at NYCC 2026, the project will include a new adventure module titled Star Wars: Tyro Squadron alongside a dedicated Core Rules expansion.

From High Fantasy to a Galaxy Far, Far Away

While Wizards of the Coast first teased a Star Wars partnership at Gen Con in July, the NYCC announcement provides the first concrete details on what players can expect. Tyro Squadron is set during the Original Trilogy and positions players as part of a secret Rebel crew operating in the shadows. Unlike the central heroics of Luke Skywalker or Princess Leia, this campaign intends to explore the “seedy underbelly” of the galaxy, similar to the scope of the previously released Star Wars: Zero Company. Players will be tasked with flying missions, exploring new environments, and contributing to the Rebellion’s overall efforts.

Expanding the Core Rules

Beyond the adventure module, Wizards of the Coast is preparing a full Core Rules expansion. While specific mechanics remain under wraps, the company suggested that the scale will be comparable to their recent World of Warcraft expansion. This includes potential adaptations for classic D&D character classes to function within the sci-fi setting, which will likely involve integrating iconic technology like lightsabers and blasters into the D&D engine.

Why it matters

For D&D players, this represents one of the most ambitious leaps in the Universes Beyond initiative. Moving from the traditional high-fantasy settings of Dungeons & Dragons to the space-opera aesthetic of Star Wars is a significant mechanical and thematic departure. The core challenge for the development team will be balancing familiar D&D gameplay loops with the specific sci-fi flavor of the Star Wars universe.

Fans looking for further details will need to wait a while longer. Wizards of the Coast has stated that additional information regarding the expansion and the Tyro Squadron adventure is scheduled for release at Star Wars Celebration in April 2027.
