Just Dance: Decades of Hits is now available on Xbox Series X|S, offering players a curated trip through the evolution of dance from the 1970s to the present day. As detailed in a recent announcement on Xbox Wire, the title aims to blend music, fashion, and movement to replicate the specific energy of different musical eras.

A Journey Through Movement

According to Choreography Director Estelle Manas, the development team prioritized authenticity when designing the game’s movement, researching music videos and TV shows from each decade to ensure the choreography reflects the specific attitude of the time. The transition from the 1970s—defined by flamboyant, accessible movement—to the highly technical and varied styles of modern pop, dancehall, and street jazz is reflected in the game’s distinct aesthetics and character designs.

To keep the experience accessible to a wide audience, the game features various difficulty levels, ranging from intuitive routines for beginners to intermediate and extreme challenges for seasoned players. The developers have also included seated choreographies to accommodate players with limited mobility, ensuring the game remains inclusive for all skill levels.

Adventure Mode and Gameplay

Beyond traditional party play, which supports up to six people locally using smartphones as controllers, the title introduces a narrative-driven Adventure mode. In this mode, players follow a character named Lyra on a journey across six themed worlds as she works to rescue her father, Dr. Gigavolt. The game also introduces new technical milestones, such as a track featuring five coaches simultaneously, providing a more complex visual and rhythmic experience.

Why it matters

For players, this release serves as a comprehensive hub for family-oriented gaming, balancing nostalgic tracks with modern hits. Because the game relies on mobile devices as controllers, it lowers the barrier to entry for game nights, allowing up to six participants to join in without requiring additional hardware.

This release is particularly notable for its design philosophy of “togetherness,” making it a viable option for households with varying ages and physical abilities. Players should keep an eye on how these varied movement styles feel as they transition between decades, as the developers have specifically engineered the game to make the evolution of dance culture feel like a literal journey through time.
