After over twenty years as a PC-exclusive titan, World of Warcraft may soon break free from its desktop roots. As reported by Eurogamer, Blizzard Entertainment is shifting its philosophy regarding where players can experience its iconic MMO, with the upcoming World of Warcraft: Forever serving as the first major step toward that multi-platform vision.

The path to multi-platform

World of Warcraft: Forever has introduced native controller support for the first time in the series’ history. According to vice president and executive producer Holly Longdale, who spoke with GamesRadar, this change is part of a broader ambition for the game’s future. “Play it wherever you want and, at some point, on whatever you want,” Longdale noted, emphasizing that the team is actively working to make gamepads a viable way to navigate Azeroth.

Longdale also pointed toward the shifting landscape of gaming hardware, referencing the potential for “more ubiquitous” platforms, including the rumored Xbox Project Helix, which is expected to bridge the gap between PC and console gaming. She highlighted that fans are already experimenting with portable devices like the ROG Ally X, proving there is a clear demand for playing the MMO beyond a traditional desk setup.

Lessons from the beta

Ahead of its official launch on November 4th, World of Warcraft: Forever has already hosted what Blizzard calls the largest beta in the series’ history. While the developer acknowledges that not every design choice will satisfy every player, Longdale emphasized that the team is focused on long-term health rather than chasing every piece of feedback. “I think the lesson we learned the most over time is ‘You don’t listen to the loudest people in the room,'” she told the outlet.

Why it matters

For the average player, this move represents a massive shift in accessibility. If Blizzard successfully bridges the gap between PC and console, it could fundamentally change how the community interacts with the game, moving away from a keyboard-and-mouse requirement toward a more flexible, lounge-friendly experience.

While Blizzard has not announced specific console release dates or regional availability updates, the focus on controller integration is the clear foundation for this transition. Players should watch for how Blizzard balances the complex UI of an MMO with the limitations of a controller, as that will likely dictate the speed and scope of a future console rollout.
