If you miss the days of getting completely turned around in a massive, sprawling dungeon, you might be in luck. World of Warcraft: Forever senior game designer Josh Greenfield recently dropped a heavy hint that the team is working on a high-level instance that captures the spirit of Blackrock Depths (BRD), the legendary, labyrinthine dungeon from WoW Classic.
When a player asked on social media for a “good BRD-like mega dungeon,” Greenfield kept his response brief and bold: “Hold our beer(s).”
Is Blackmaw Hold the One?
The timing of the tease, paired with an image shared by Greenfield, has turned immediate attention toward Blackmaw Hold. The image appears to show an entrance near the Timbermaw Furbolg area in northern Azshara. Blizzard officially announced Blackmaw Hold at BlizzCon 2026 as one of nine new dungeons arriving with the launch of World of Warcraft: Forever on November 4.
While Blizzard hasn’t explicitly confirmed that Blackmaw Hold is the dungeon Greenfield was teasing, its status as a level 55-60 high-level instance and its description as a “Great Furbolg City” suggest it has the scale required to mirror a classic experience. As of now, details on the dungeon’s layout or total boss count remain under wraps.
Why BRD Still Matters
For veteran players, the mention of Blackrock Depths isn’t just about adding more bosses to a list. BRD is infamous for its immense, maze-like design, featuring over 20 bosses and no single set path, often requiring multiple play sessions to fully explore. It represents a style of dungeon design that feels more like an adventure through a city rather than a linear hallway of mobs.
While other high-level dungeons like Shaper’s Terrace and Alcaz Prison are also slated for the November 4 launch, none have been linked to the “mega dungeon” hype yet. We’ll likely have to wait until we get closer to the launch date to see if the team is truly bringing back the kind of dungeon you can get lost in for hours.
