Control Resonant will deliver substantial lore and story content despite promotional footage focused heavily on combat, according to developer Remedy. Senior communications manager Miika Huttunen confirmed that the narrative side of the game has been deliberately kept under wraps until release, not because it’s sparse, but as an intentional strategy to preserve surprises for players.

What Remedy Is Keeping Under Lock

The combat-heavy trailers and gameplay reveals so far reflect a deliberate choice rather than the game’s actual balance. Huttunen stated there’s “lots of weird stuff to come” with “plenty of twists and turns and surprises” waiting for players to discover. The developer is asking fans to trust Remedy’s track record and give the studio “the benefit of the doubt” regarding the narrative depth.

Story elements will emerge through multiple channels: NPC dialogue, scattered collectibles, and environmental clues woven throughout the game world. Lore-specific collectibles—including FBC documents and written materials from before the Hiss invasion—are distributed liberally across the environment. The world itself functions as a storytelling tool; players who take time to explore will find shortcuts to unlock, subtle environmental details to decipher, and NPC interactions that expand understanding of Control Resonant’s setting.

Huttunen also confirmed that player dialogue choices will create meaningful variations: NPCs will react differently based on decisions made, side quests will branch accordingly, and these choices gradually shape the protagonist’s personality. The main story follows a largely linear structure with one distinct ending, though Remedy’s history suggests it will be one players won’t anticipate.

Why This Matters

Control built its reputation on blending tight supernatural action with dense environmental storytelling and bizarre lore. The original game rewarded exploration and reading scattered documents, creating a world that felt lived-in and mysterious. Huttunen’s comments reassure longtime fans that Resonant won’t abandon this formula despite its action-forward marketing.

The confirmation that dialogue choices influence NPC behavior and side-quest paths suggests Remedy is expanding the role of player agency in how the story unfolds—a meaningful evolution for a franchise known for delivering cohesive, authored narratives. The emphasis on a single “distinct ending” aligns with Control’s approach to meaningful conclusion rather than branching conclusions, maintaining narrative focus.

The gameplay footage shown at Gamescom already hints at the scale of worldbuilding: Manhattan has become unrecognizable, with gravity-warped streets and architectural impossibilities. Dylan’s transformation from subject to protagonist-seeking-the-Mold raises immediate questions about character motivation and the wider catastrophe. Remedy appears to be layering Dylan’s personal arc alongside the mystery of what happened to the city itself.

What’s Next

With Remedy maintaining strict control over narrative reveals, expect the lore to remain largely under embargo until launch. As Control Resonant approaches release, players will likely continue seeing combat-focused previews while story and world-building details stay protected—giving fans plenty of mysteries left to uncover when the game launches.
