Microsoft is officially consolidating its non-gaming operations under a new banner called XP. Announced via the official Xbox Wire, this division is designed to unify capabilities that have historically been scattered across various internal teams. XP is structured into four distinct pillars: Xbox Places, Xbox Pictures, Xbox Partnerships, and Xbox Products.

Bringing Xbox Beyond the Console

According to Matthew Ball, Chief Strategy Officer at Xbox, the goal of XP is to help established franchises reach wider audiences and foster deeper connections with both long-term players and new fans. While Ball emphasized that gaming remains the primary focus of the business, the creation of XP signals a formal strategy to lean harder into cross-media expansion, specifically within film, television, and physical experiences.

This move follows the recent success of Xbox-related media, most notably the ‘Fallout’ television series, which reached 83 million viewers within its first 13 weeks. The company is also continuing its push into cinema, with a ‘Gears of War’ film and a ‘Sea of Thieves’ adaptation currently in development. These projects follow the momentum generated by other industry juggernauts, such as the massive commercial performance of the ‘Super Mario Bros.’ and ‘Minecraft’ film projects.

Expanding into Physical Spaces

Beyond screens, the ‘Xbox Places’ division will manage the company’s real-world footprint. This includes the upcoming Minecraft theme parks currently being developed for the UK and US markets. These locations represent a significant financial commitment, with over £85 million invested in the project, and are currently slated to begin opening between 2026 and 2027.

Why it matters

For players, this represents a shift toward seeing your favorite game worlds manifest in more places than just your console or PC. Whether it is through serialized television, feature films, or physical theme park attractions, Microsoft is clearly betting that the longevity of its biggest franchises depends on being present in multiple forms of media simultaneously.

However, this strategic pivot occurs against a backdrop of ongoing concerns regarding stability at the company. Following a series of significant staff reductions across its game studios and software divisions over the last few years, fans and observers will be watching to see how this dedicated XP division impacts the company’s resource allocation. While the company pursues growth through these new avenues, the primary question for the community remains: will these media expansions enhance the gaming experience, or are they a sign that the company is diversifying away from its core software roots?
