Rockstar Games is going to extreme lengths to ensure the ‘Leonida’ version of Florida in GTA 6 feels authentic. In a recent discussion with Game Informer, Rockstar’s senior vice president of narrative, Rupert Humphries, detailed how the development team stepped out of the office to immerse themselves in the local culture of Miami and South Florida.
First-hand Field Research
According to Humphries, the team didn’t just rely on maps or news footage. Instead, they hit the ground in real-life Florida, spending time in the Everglades, the Keys, and various nightlife spots. The most unconventional part of their process involved riding along with former police officers at night to get a genuine sense of the local environment, alongside visiting strip clubs and nightclubs to capture the atmosphere of modern-day Florida.
Updating the Vice City Aesthetic
While Rockstar has explored its fictional version of Miami before, the last title to feature the setting was 2006’s Vice City Stories. Since two decades have passed, the studio is aiming to capture the modern state of the region for GTA 6. The game’s map, known in-game as Leonida, is set to feature six distinct regions including Port Gellhorn, the Leonida Keys, and Mount Kalaga National Park, offering activities ranging from kayaking and air boating to street racing.
Why it matters
For players, this deep dive suggests that Rockstar is doubling down on the lived-in, chaotic detail that has become a staple of the series. While the presence of strip clubs and adult-oriented content in GTA 6 is consistent with the franchise’s history, the team’s field research implies that these locations will be integrated into a much more dense and modern world. Players can look forward to seeing how these real-world experiences translate into gameplay when GTA 6 launches on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X and S this November. There is currently no official word on specific regional support or local server deployments for the Middle East, so players should keep an eye on official Rockstar announcements as the launch date approaches.
