The Blood of Dawnwalker, one of 2026’s most anticipated open-world RPGs, launched on September 3, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The dark fantasy game comes from Rebel Wolves, a studio founded by veterans of CD Projekt Red, and is published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. Here is everything officially confirmed about it.
Who made it
Rebel Wolves was founded by former members of CD Projekt Red, the studio behind The Witcher and Cyberpunk 2077, including people who worked on The Witcher 3. That background in expansive RPG worlds and morally complex stories set high expectations for the studio’s debut, which is a new original universe rather than an established franchise. Bandai Namco’s backing as publisher also gave the project a global release across all major platforms on the same day.
Setting and story
The game takes place in Vale Sangora, a fictional valley in the Carpathian Mountains, in the mid-14th century. Its world draws on Hungarian, Romanian and wider Carpathian folklore. Players control Coen, a young man who becomes a Dawnwalker: human by day and vampire by night. After the ancient vampire lord Brencis abducts Coen’s family, Coen has to find a way to rescue them before Brencis’s investiture ceremony.
The 30-day time limit
The most distinctive system is time. Players have 30 in-game days and nights to rescue Coen’s family. Time works like a currency: only actions that affect the plot move the clock forward, so exploring, fighting and simply walking around do not waste it. That forces players to choose which quests matter most, and it means different players can reach the ending with very different outcomes.
Day and night combat
Coen’s two forms play differently. By day he relies on directional swordplay and blood magic. At night he gains vampiric powers and can lean on stealth. Switching between the two, and planning around which form suits a mission, is at the core of the game. Some problems are easier to solve in daylight through conversation and swordplay, while others open up at night when Coen can move unseen and use his vampiric strength.
Launch results
The Blood of Dawnwalker sold one million copies within three days of release, a strong start for a new IP. Critics praised its writing and its dual-form gameplay, with Metacritic scores in the 80s across platforms. It is available on PC through Steam, GOG and the Xbox app.
Why it matters
The Blood of Dawnwalker is a rare new IP in a genre dominated by sequels, and its sales show there is room for original dark fantasy RPGs from veteran teams. The time-limit system also gives it a clear identity compared with other open-world games.
For players deciding whether to buy, the key point is that the 30-day limit rewards planning rather than punishing exploration, so it is less stressful than it sounds.
