Capcom used its Gamescom presentation to reveal substantial new content for two major franchises: Mega Man Dual Override introduces Proto Man as a playable character alongside a fresh overheating mechanic, while Dragon’s Dogma 2 Dark Arisen expands the RPG with a frozen new region launching October 9.

What Capcom Actually Showed

Mega Man Dual Override marks the twelfth mainline Mega Man game and features Proto Man as a playable character for the first time in a mainline entry. The two protagonists play differently, giving players distinct approaches to stages, obstacles, and bosses rather than forcing a single fixed playstyle.

The game’s namesake Override mechanic lets both characters temporarily boost performance by switching the arm cannon to rapid fire and increasing overall power output. The catch: once the meter empties, the robot overheats and becomes noticeably weaker until recovery, turning every activation into a genuine strategic choice rather than a mindless button press.

Before each stage, players select from Custom Chips that reshape how a run unfolds. Revealed options include a damage-absorbing shield bubble, a faster-charging special meter, hover ability, and a Rush Coil chip for reaching high ledges. Special weapons draw from a shared energy pool to prevent endless spamming, and the newest trailer teases a heavy charge strike combined with aerial dash mobility.

Among eight new Robot Masters is Twinkle Girl, a firework-themed boss that fills the screen with pyrotechnic projectile patterns before escalating into a tougher second phase. A fan design contest for the new Robot Masters drew more than ten thousand submissions. Eagle-eyed viewers spotted Astro Man, a returning Robot Master from Mega Man 8, though Capcom hasn’t confirmed other classic returns.

Mega Man Dual Override launches in 2027 across PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 Dark Arisen introduces Norgan, an abandoned ice-locked region scarred by past conflicts. The expansion features a large new area built around exploration, with ruined settlements, hostile wildlife, and frozen terrain that actively influences combat. Enemies include a massive tree-wielding giant capable of breathing damaging ice and triggering avalanches, plus an undead Fallen Dragon that summons lesser undead swarms. Breaking ice and hanging icicles offer environmental combat options.

New gear comes through Spoils gathered from enemies, chests, and abandoned buildings. An appraiser converts Spoils into Relics—upgraded weapons and armor with enhanced stats and new combat skills—using limited Rift Crystals as currency. The expansion adds cosmetic options including hairstyles, tattoos, and clothing. Dark Arisen requires the 2025 base game and launches October 9.

Why This Matters

Proto Man’s inclusion represents a significant shift for the Mega Man series, traditionally built around the Blue Bomber’s solo campaign. Adding a character with distinct mechanics expands strategic depth without forcing players into a single rhythm—a design philosophy that permeates Dual Override’s layers of customization through Override timing, Custom Chips, and weapon variety. For a franchise historically demanding precise execution and pattern memorization, these systems offer meaningful player expression within the demanding platforming skeleton.

Dragon’s Dogma 2 already established itself as a substantial RPG at launch. The Dark Arisen expansion’s focus on environmental storytelling—ruined settlements suggesting history, frozen terrain dictating combat tactics—shows how expansions can deepen exploration rather than simply padding zone count. The Rift Crystal economy forces genuine gear prioritization rather than casual upgrades.

What’s Next

Players should watch for more Robot Master reveals heading into Dual Override’s 2027 release, particularly whether Capcom intends to bring back more classic faces or stick with the fresh eight. The Fallen Dragon’s unfinished state at the presentation suggests Dark Arisen reserves harder challenges for players willing to dig into its frozen depths.
