Roblox has officially become the most-played game by total hours across PC and console for the first half of 2026, racking up 4.05 billion hours of playtime. A new report from Newzoo and GEEIQ, as reported by GamesIndustry.biz, highlights that the platform is successfully holding onto a maturing demographic of players over the age of 16.

Shifting Demographics and Spending

According to the data, Roblox’s audience is distinct from traditional gaming markets. Roughly 80% of these older Roblox players have spent money on games within the last six months, a figure that significantly outpaces the 59% spending rate seen among non-Roblox players. Newzoo market analyst Tianyi Gu noted that this maturing audience is uniquely driven by entertainment IP, which helps explain the platform’s sustained engagement.

Despite the massive scale—averaging 14 million concurrent users across 6.7 million active experiences—the report points out that the platform is currently dominated by long-running live-service titles rather than a rotation of new releases. Players who do eventually move on from the platform typically gravitate toward other live-service giants like Minecraft or Fortnite, though 30% of departing users shift to realistic shooters like Call of Duty and Grand Theft Auto Online, hinting at a desire for more AAA-style action experiences.

The Push for AAA Quality

To keep this aging audience from leaving, Roblox is leaning into technical upgrades. The company is developing ‘Roblox Reality,’ an AI-driven upscaling tool intended to bring photorealistic graphics to the platform. An early version of this technology is expected to drop later this year or early 2027. Additionally, the company is prioritizing long-term retention strategies, such as strict age verification, even at the cost of short-term monetization metrics for younger players.

GEEIQ’s analysis of brand activations suggests that while many companies are experimenting with the platform, strategies vary wildly. While some brands build a world and leave it, others like Sega (with Sonic Speed Simulator) have seen massive success through long-term, owned-world commitments.

Why it matters

For players, this shift signals that Roblox is moving beyond its reputation as a ‘kids-only’ space. The platform is actively targeting an older demographic that is already showing a high propensity for in-game spending. If you are a fan of traditional live-service games, the ongoing development of photorealistic tools and more mature content suggests that Roblox may eventually offer a direct alternative to the AAA titles you play on PC or console.

While the report clarifies that Roblox isn’t poised to cannibalize the AAA audience in the immediate future, it remains a critical space to watch. These ongoing platform experiments are essentially a live look at how the next generation of gamers chooses to interact with their favorite entertainment properties.
