Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy is now live on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. This prequel centers on Sophia’s journey to a mythical island to confront a creature tied to a devastating curse, marking a significant shift for the franchise after the events of Requiem.

A Fresh Take on a Familiar World

David Dedeine, co-founder of Asobo and the game’s director, explained that moving away from the stories of Amicia and Hugo required a deliberate creative rethink. Since the ending of Requiem closed the door on that narrative thread, the team faced the challenge of expanding the universe without repeating what came before. “We wanted to open the window a little bit, get some fresh air, and change a little bit the tone too,” Dedeine said, noting that seven years in the same universe meant the studio needed to avoid simply mimicking past entries.

Finding balance proved tricky. Dedeine acknowledged the tension between introducing new elements and preserving the series’ core identity. “Sometimes you fall back too easily on the existing rail and sometimes you try to go too far in the other direction,” he said. “Finding this balance between adding the right amount of new flavor while keeping the spirit and the tone we had in the previous games” was the central challenge.

Anna Demetriou, who voices Sophia, brought her own perspective to the character’s development. Working with lead writer Carol Ann Bañuls—a new voice for the Sophia character—created a collaborative space that Demetriou described as unusually creatively free. “She was so open to, ‘Do you like this line? Do you think that she would say something like this?'” Demetriou said. “I don’t always have that creative freedom as an actor, so it was nice to feel that we got to do this together a lot of the time.”

Rats Replaced by Something New

One of the most visually defining elements of A Plague Tale—the swarms of rats—won’t dominate Resonance. Instead, Dedeine teased a replacement that functions in a “much more dynamic way.” He stopped short of revealing what that element is, keeping it as a surprise for players. “It’s something we haven’t shown because we want to keep it a big surprise, but I think it’s something interesting and innovative,” Dedeine said.

Why This Matters

Prequels carry inherent risk, especially for series built on strong character arcs. A Plague Tale established itself through the relationship between Amicia and Hugo, so stepping away from them entirely meant either finding a new emotional core or risking fan disappointment. Sophia’s story—grounded in personal stakes and mythological stakes—offers that alternative center. The decision to shift away from the rat swarms, the series’ signature visual threat, signals the studio’s confidence that the new direction can stand on its own without leaning on nostalgia.

The emphasis on collaborative voice acting and writing also reflects modern AAA development, where bringing actors into the creative process has become more common practice. Demetriou’s comfort with Sophia—describing her as “very much on center”—suggests the character resonates authentically with those bringing her to life.

What Comes Next

With Resonance now in players’ hands, the industry will watch how audiences respond to this thematic and mechanical departure. The reception to this prequel could shape how Asobo approaches the A Plague Tale franchise going forward.
