Following the release of Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy, the team at Asobo Studio has opened up about the development process, detailing how they balanced the series’ grounded tone with a more action-oriented protagonist. In a recent interview with GamingBolt, lead game writer Carol Ann Bañuls and creative director David Dedeine discussed the challenges of building a prequel that recontextualizes the series’ lore while advancing its gameplay mechanics.

Designing a New Kind of Protagonist

Sophia presents a stark contrast to previous protagonists, having been born into a world of conflict. Bañuls noted that the goal was to make Sophia feel capable without rendering her invincible, emphasizing that her confidence as a ‘plunderer’ can often lead to risky, impulsive behavior. To ensure the game maintained the series’ established tension, Dedeine explained the team utilized a ‘dagger wins the fight’ philosophy, focusing on speed and stealth rather than brute force to maintain a sense of vulnerability throughout combat.

Mechanically, the game introduces a new manifestation of the Macula that functions more like a predator, reacting to motion rather than just light. Dedeine highlighted that this shift allows for more dynamic gameplay where players must constantly pivot between stealth and chase sequences, keeping the experience fresh compared to the puzzle-heavy rat encounters found in previous titles.

Technical Performance and DualSense Integration

For console players, the developers confirmed distinct performance targets. On PS5 and Xbox Series X, players can choose between a Quality mode (native 1440p, upscaled to 4K at 30 fps) and a Performance mode (native 1080p, upscaled to 1440p at 60 fps). The game is also officially PS5 Pro Enhanced, which Dedeine stated allows for top-tier resolution and graphical settings at a steady 60 fps. On PC, the game includes support for DLSS, FSR, and XeSS, alongside uncapped frame rates and native ultrawide support.

The team also leaned heavily into the DualSense controller on PS5 to enhance immersion. This includes haptic feedback that differentiates between blade clashes and environmental hazards, as well as adaptive triggers that simulate the tension of using the grappling hook.

Why it matters

For fans of the franchise, Resonance serves as a narrative bridge that explains the origins of Sophia’s beliefs and emotional defenses. By recontextualizing the Macula and exploring the history of Minotaur’s Island across two vastly different time periods, the game aims to add depth to the broader series lore.

Whether you are diving into the game for the narrative connection to Requiem or the refined combat mechanics, these updates clarify the studio’s intent to keep the franchise grounded yet evolving. As for the future of the series and characters like Amicia, Dedeine confirmed that while the team has many ideas for the universe, their priority remains ensuring any potential future entries offer a fresh and authentic experience.
